On 26th March 2021, President Uhuru Kenyatta imposed more covid-19 measures to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus. As in March 2021, Covid-19 had taken a new wave in what the ministry of health termed as the third wave.
The ministry was recording a surge numbers of the novel pandemic. The positivity rate had to 16.1% which forced the President to impose more measures. Among the tough measures, 5 counties which included Nairobi, Kajiado, Machakos, Nakuru and Kiambu were locked down. This is because the counties had been declared covid-19 hot spots.
The President also ordered that all learning institutions across the country should suspend face-to-face learning activities till further notice. Learning institutions had only reopened for face-to-face learning in October 2020 after a very long break of 8 months since the outbreak of the novel in the country.
After suspending all face-to-face learning activities, students from different Universities and colleges were expected to go home. Some of the Universities immediately ordered their students to vacate and clear all the premises. Most of them waited until Monday 29th March before they officially communicated to students. At this point, a traveling timeline that had been given by the government had lapsed.
Most of the students could not travel back to their homes because they have to pass the locked counties before they reach home. Some study in the locked counties therefore they cannot get out of the counties. Some of them live in the locked counties, therefore, are unable to enter.
According to research made by Mnews, such students should not worry, They can make plans with their institutions to give them traveling passes. These passes will enable them to get out and in of the locked counties. Already Kenyatta University has adopted the idea and their students are free to travel.
