University fee is expected to increase from 16,000 to 48,000 per year after the release of the 2021/22 budget. While releasing the budget this week, Treasury CS Ekur Yatani said that the current funding in the University sector is not sustainable.
The University Vice Chancellors have been pushing for the increase of the tuition fees in the Kenyan Universities since last year. The release of the education budget by the Treasury means that the fees may increase three times the normal. This means that the tuition fee per semester will be pushed from 8,000 to 24,000.
As per the budget, the ministry of education was allocated Ksh. 77.7bn for public universities. The Higher Education Loan Board was allocated Ksh. 15.8bn. The funds’ allocation to the students from HELB is also tripped to reduce by Ksh. 8000.
The Vice Chancellors are expected to release the new fee structures after the changes.
